Each spring the North Dakota League of Cities sponsors a statewide Mayor for a Day essay contest. This contest encourages young people to think about public service and future community leadership. As in the past, the contest is open to any third grade student living in North Dakota. This year, we will also have a contest for seventh grade students. Since middle school students in North Dakota receive extensive civics and government instruction, this is a great opportunity to tie the essay contest to their classroom instruction. Each grade will be judged separately and two winners will be chosen. Another change this year is the ability for students to submit essays on their own and not through their school. We still encourage teachers to have their students complete essays and submit them as they have done in the past, but we will also accept essays from students that may not be offered the opportunity in their classroom. The essay winners will be announced during Celebrate Cities Day which will be held March 3 in Bismarck. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Carissa Richter or at 701-223-3518 or via emailcarissa@ndlc.org.
